Our Super (Bowl) Weekend

It started out as a typical weekend. I went to Curves Saturday morning, then Robyn came over to watch the Kentucky game with us at 2:00. Darn it, the Cats lost by ONE point. Tim called and asked if we could have dinner Saturday instead of Sunday because he was having a couple of friends over for the Super Bowl (not that he's interested in football, mind you, he just likes having his friends over). So we met for dinner, then we headed up to UH to see the opera that Robyn was playing for. Traffic was really bad getting there, since two lanes were closed for repairs part of the way, and we were arriving with no time to spare. As we walked toward the opera house, I took out my phone to turn it off and stuck it back in my pocket just as we started up the concrete steps. I stumbled on a step and started falling, but with my hands in my pockets I couldn't stop myself. I landed with a thud, hitting my mouth flat on a step (just glad it wasn't my nose or my glasses!). OUCH! There wasn't a lot of blood, as the skin inside my lip was just barely broken, and my teeth were not damaged, but my lip swelled up really fast. We had the nice people there bring us some ice, and we went home to get some ibuprofen. So much for the opera. It could have been a whole lot worse, so a fat lip is a minor inconvenience. It's just a good thing that I wasn't slated to play oboe at church on Sunday morning--just dulcimer!

Sunday afternoon, Ben ate some lunch and then went in and took a nap. When he got up, he told me that he'd had a weird "muscle spasm" in his chest and back, and that's why he'd gone and laid down. The pain was completely gone by then, but I heard "chest pain" and pretty much insisted that he go get checked out at the ER. He was not happy about that, but he humored me. We got to the local ER around 5:00, and by 5:30 they had checked his vitals and done an EKG and sent us back to the waiting room. The lady who did the EKG said it looked normal. We sat for another hour and a half, trying to watch the Super Bowl on the small TV there, and after Ben asked for the second time how much longer it might be, he was called back to the next cubicle to have blood drawn. Then we were sent to another waiting area, after which he was taken to a "room." The nurse there was getting ready to start an IV so he could stay overnight, but he declined to allow it. After waiting some more, it was 8:00, and there was no dr. in sight. Ben figured that if they had seen anything unusual in the EKG, they would have been more eager to treat him. And the nurse told him that if it were heart pain, he would KNOW it, since that is a different kind of pain than anything he's ever felt. He was really unhappy that the hospital had gone into what he called its CYA mode of admitting anybody who said the words "chest pain," regardless of the fact that it was probably a false alarm. At that point, he told them he was ready to go home, and he signed out AMA (against medical advice). On the bright side, he did get a baseline EKG, since he's never had one before. He did admit that it was the right thing to do to go ahead and go get checked; he was just disappointed at how the medical establishment chose to handle the situation.

So that's how we spent our Super Bowl Weekend. How was yours?

That sounds very similar to our ER experience when Neal hurt his back....5 hours later and no real help. I'm glad it turned out to be uneventful though!!
