Who Needs Fingertips Anyway?

Wednesday morning, Ben and I went to SEARCH to prepare and serve the day's hot lunch (South Main provides volunteers on the fourth Wednesday of each month). We chopped, sliced, and diced a whole bunch of red peppers, celery, tomatoes, and onions, using their collection of dull knives. On the last onion, I was trying to get one more slice out of it, when the knife slipped and sliced my fingertip instead. OOPS! Talk about blood---are you aware of just how much blood flow there is in your fingertips? Truly, we are wonderfully made, down to the tiny details of blood vessels in our fingertips! A good sized, thick flap of skin barely missed being severed completely, and it took a long time and LOTS of band-aids tightly wrapped around it to get the bleeding to stop. For a while, I put on a latex glove and immersed it in ice water. At any rate, today it's looking much better, but it's rather annoying to play the oboe with a bandaged finger, and I'm not really ready to leave it uncovered yet, so I'm not sure how I'll manage tomorrow when I have a rehearsal for a job at a local synagogue. I'm just glad I'm not a harpist!
